The emergency department component includes an interventional radiology suite, waiting rooms, lab enhancements, two new operating rooms and several patient and family waiting rooms. Future phases include renovation of endoscopy, recovery and anesthesia areas of surgical services, a new pharmacy, CT scan room and space to accommodate from 25 to 30 additional beds. A Mercy spokeswoman tells GlobeSt.com the first phase will open Oct. 28. All other project components are under construction.

The state has provided $1.5 million to the emergency department component, which includes funding the purchase of new equipment. This department is expected to create 100 new jobs, according to Gov. Ed Rendell. The funding comes from the commonwealth's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. In a press release, Rendell says the green-building plan is consistent with his Growing Greener initiative, developed to promote energy conservation and improved air and water quality.

Mercy Suburban is a 129-bed acute care teaching hospital. It is a member of Mercy Health System of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Catholic Health East, sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy and also operates the Norristown Regional Cancer Center. According to Lisa Mallon, interim CEO, this will be the only green hospital on the East Coast to be LEED certified.
