CHELSEA, MA-Chelsea will get its first new construction in decades when Texas-based developer JPI breaks ground next year on a $50-million project, bringing 160 waterfront apartments to the last remaining parcel on Admiral's Hill.
Thomas O'Brien, executive vice president and managing partner with the Irvine, TX firm, tells GlobeSt.com that the project, Jefferson at Admiral's Hill, will be built at the intersection of Commandment's Way and Justin Drive. The 2.59-acre parcel is the site of the long-closed Chelsea Naval Hospital.
"There are very few sites on Boston's waterfront where a project like this can be developed," O'Brien says. "We think this is a unique opportunity to place a residential building on Boston's waterfront."
JPI will break ground on the site next year, replacing the former naval facility with a single building containing 80 one-bedroom and 80 two-bedroom units, an underground parking garage and amenities that include a movie screening room, fitness center, resident pub and business center. O'Brien says construction of the apartment complex should be completed within 15 months.
Located just west of Mary O'Malley Park, a 19-acre community park with views of the Boston skyline, the property--the first luxury community in Chelsea--will overlook a waterfront marina, which is also being redeveloped to include restaurants and walking trails.
The Chelsea Naval Hospital, which closed in 1974, served generations of veterans and enlisted men since it was built in 1836 atop a hill where early colonists once watched the Battle of Bunker Hill unfold. Among its more notable patients was former President John F. Kennedy, who was a Navy ensign when he was admitted for treatment of wounds suffered when his PT boat was cut in half during combat in the Pacific in World War II.
