Meadowlands Flooding Affecting Economic Health

LYNDHURST, NJ-New Jersey is looking to speed up its plans to deal with flooding in the Meadowlands, a regular problem that seriously affects real estate decisions.

LYNDHURST, NJ-”There’s no such thing as a ‘little’ flooding problem,” said Susan Bass Levin, commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. Flood management infrastructure in the area is “fragmented,” leading to impassible roads during heavy rains. A Rutgers study of stormwater utility is in the process, and Bass Levin called for expediting it. The state has also received early approval from FEMA for federal funds.

“We cannot continue to grow and continue to build without correcting the problem, looking at flood plain management,” she said.

Bass Levin, also the chair of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, spoke at the second annual Meadowlands Economic Summit, held here at the Meadowlands Environmental Center. The 14 towns in the Meadowlands have 3% of New Jersey’s jobs. Manufacturing, wholesale trade, warehousing and transportation represent more than half the balance of this industrial haven.
