MANSFIELD, MA-W/S Development Associates LLC has broken ground on Mansfield Crossing, a 400,000-sf shopping center here. The project, when completed, will be the largest retail center in central Massachusetts.

Mansfield Crossing is rising at the junction of Routes 495 and 140 in Mansfield, midway between Boston and Providence.

David Fleming, corporate marketing director for W/S Development, tells GlobeSt.com that the multimillion-dollar project, which should be completed by the fall of 2007, is already 95% leased by a number of national retailers and restaurants including Kohl's, Borders, Best Buy, Sports Authority, Coldwater Creek, Ann Taylor LOFT, TGI Friday's, Chico's, Linens 'n Things, Michaels and Petco.

The shopping center will house the second Massachusetts location of outdoor outfitter LL Bean. The company recently opened its first Bay State store in Burlington, MA.

The project will create an open-air, pedestrian friendly marketplace with period lighting and sidewalks centered around a four-acre pond.

Fleming said the site was selected because of the area's high population density, rapid growth, high traffic count, average annual income of around $80,000 per year, and a lack of large retail locations in the area.
