LACEY, WA-Cabela's Inc. plans to develop one of its destination retail stores here, near the junction of Interstate 5 and Marvin Road, seven miles west of Olympia. The Sidney, NE-based retailer of hunting and fishing gear says it has reached agreement with Olympia developer Tri Vo to build a 185,000-sf store at his Lacey Gateway project in the Hawks Prairie area of Lacey. The company on Wednesday submitted a site plan application to the City of Lacey.

If the approval process goes smoothly, Cabela's says the store could open for business next fall. Vo, president of Triway Enterprises and managing member of Hawks Prairie LLC, the developer of the project, sees the store as the anchor tenant for a "lifestyle center" that someday could include some four million sf of retail, office and residential buildings.

Vo says he likes Cabela's because the company believes in conservation and his project will be guided by environmentally friendly principals. "Cabela's business philosophy…makes them a perfect anchor for this project." A source at Cabela's tells GlobeSt.com that its stores typically attract a lot of surrounding development, including hotels, restaurants and convenience stores.

The city has agreed to use $9.9 million in state grant funds to build a new road network to serve Cabela's, which is expected to draw millions of visitors annually. Vo is donating the right-of-way. The city also has agreed to acquire five acres of Vo's land with plans to develop some type of public facility, such as a library, activity center or farmers market.

Cabela's currently operates 18 retail locations, including four that opened this year, and has announced plans for 12 additional stores. The centerpiece of the Lacey store will be a mountain replica with running waterfalls and streams, a trout pond and trophy animals in re-creations of their distinct habitats. The store will also have a walk-through freshwater aquarium, a deli-style restaurant, a shooting gallery and an indoor archery range.
