The 35-acre hotel development, which is slated to get stated next year, will include a separate but adjacent restaurant and spa. The master plan also includes as much as 1,000 for-sale residential units on about 300 acres, 33 acres for office/light manufacturing, 13 acres for retail/commercial and 50 acres for parks, open space and trails.

The project has long been a dream of Joan Austin, the family's 76-year-old matriarch. "We have had many offers over the years from developers who wanted to purchase our property," Austin says in a prepared statement. "We could have sold and lost control of the quality of the way it will look and feel."

The property abuts the family's dental chair company headquarters on the northeast side of the city. The proposed development has been dubbed Springbrook Village and a team of planners, engineers, designers, hotel and hospitality consultants and an advertising/PR firm have been hired to manage marketing and development.

A groundbreaking for the hotel is expected to occur in the spring, with the restaurant and spa to get underway shortly thereafter. The hotel is slated to open in 2009.
