PLAINFIELD, IN-Dick's Sporting Goods has expanded its Midwest distribution center here to 725,000 sf from 350,000 sf. The expansion, which was managed by Indianapolis-based Brandt Construction, also has more than doubled the capacity of the facility, which currently services 100 Dick's stores. At full capacity, the center will service up to 230 stores and employ as many as 700 people, according to the company.

Pittsburgh-based Dick's acquired the distribution center in June 2004 in conjunction with its purchase of Galyan's Trading Co. At that time, there were 190 employees working at the facility. Today Dick's employs 310 workers there, and plans to have more than 400 full-time associates on board before the end of next year.

Dick's total investment in the project is approximately $35 million. Company officials did not return phone calls at press time.
