Foxwoods Casino Philadelphia is a planned $560-million complex on 16 acres at Columbus Boulevard and Reed Street. Foxwoods Development Co.'s plan calls for an entertainment promenade along the river, restaurants and retail shops. SugarHouse Casino is a $550-million project slated for 22.6 acres on N. Delaware Avenue at Shackamaxon Street in the Northern Liberties neighborhood. Chicago developer Neil Bluhm heads the SugarHouse partnership, which also includes Dan Keating, a suburban developer.
The losers are TrumpStreet, headed by Donald Trump, which planned the only site not on the river; Planet Hollywood's Riverwalk and Pinnacle Entertainment's bid for a 33-acre site not far from the SugarHouse site.
Pittsburgh's one license went to Detroit-developer Dan Barden for a Majestic Star Casino. It beat out bids by Cleveland-based Forest City Enterprises, which would partner with Harrah's entertainment and St. Louis-based Isle of Capri Casinos Inc.
The two additional licenses went to Sands Bethworks, proposed by Las Vegas-based Sands Corp. for a $600-million facility at the former site of Bethlehem Steel Corp. in Bethlehem, and to Mount Airy Resort for a $400-million facility that will also include a 400-room hotel in the Poconos. The Sands bid beat out Aztar's entry for a casino near Allentown. Mount Airy developer Louis DeNaples beat a bid by Matzel Development for a casino at Pocono Manor.
