GWCAR, the only association in the DC area to focus specifically on commercial brokers, has just elected its leadership for 2008. Tom Fulcher, executive vice president at Studley, will be taking the organization's helm this time next year. Fulcher currently co-manages the Washington, DC office of Studley.

With that decision place, the organization is free to focus on the upcoming year.

"The biggest goal for GWCAR is to continue to find ways to provide services to the commercial brokerage community," Almquist tells GlobeSt.com. One area the organization has identified is the need for continuing education aimed specifically at commercial brokers. Because the license requirements for both residential and commercial real estate brokers are the same, service providers tend to focus on the needs of residential brokers, she explains. Thus continuing education classes, which are a requirement to maintain a real estate license, usually are designed with this group in mind.

GWCAR also intends to continue its work with local governments, a strength of the organization, she also says.

Underlying these initiatives is another GWCAR goal, that of increasing its membership which currently numbers around 570. "That will just naturally follow if we focus on delivering more services tailored to the needs of the commercial brokerage community," Almquist says.
