East Penn Plans $130M Expansion

LYON STATION, PA-A $21.4-million state incentive package will leverage $108 million for a new battery plant and distribution facility at the company's 490-acre complex.

LYON STATION, PA-East Penn Manufacturing Co. has committed to a $130-million expansion of its existing approximately 11-building, 490-acre headquarters complex over the next three years. The project begins with expansion of its wastewater treatment facility, which paves the way for construction of a new battery plant and distribution facility along with additions to existing battery plants and the company’s health and safety center.

A spokeswoman confirms that the company “had begun moving ground,” but says the sizes of the new facilities have not been finalized. The distribution facility is scheduled for the first phase of new construction. East Penn, one of the world’s biggest battery manufacturers, was founded here in 1946 and is the largest employer in Berks County. With the expansion, it expects to add at least 500 new jobs to its current 4,828-person work force.
