The top six retailers did not change from the same period in 2005. Target, which came in as the seventh largest, rose one place since 2005, switching its raking with Costco Wholesale. Kroger remained at sixth place, while Sears Holdings Corp. was in the ninth position.
Dutch retailer Ahold, which owns such US chains as Giant, Tops and Stop & Shop, fell out of the top 10, replaced by German discounter Schwarz. Meanwhile, the top 10 US retailers all made the global top 20 in terms of sales.
Most of the largest retailers are in the food, drug and mass-merchandise categories. However, 21% of the top 250 are hardlines and leisure-goods merchants, led by Home Depot and followed by Lowe's, Best Buy, Ikea and Staples.
