Top Retailers Keep Growing

NEW YORK CITY-Sales at the top 250 retailers around the globe increased by 6% over a one-year period that ended June 30, reaching $3.01 trillion. The largest retailer sales wise was Wal-Mart, followed by Paris-based Carrefour and Home Depot, according to a Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu report.

The top six retailers did not change from the same period in 2005. Target, which came in as the seventh largest, rose one place since 2005, switching its raking with Costco Wholesale. Kroger remained at sixth place, while Sears Holdings Corp. was in the ninth position.

Dutch retailer Ahold, which owns such US chains as Giant, Tops and Stop & Shop, fell out of the top 10, replaced by German discounter Schwarz. Meanwhile, the top 10 US retailers all made the global top 20 in terms of sales.
