"It's the most extensive renovation we've had in 20 years," says a hotel spokeswoman.

Shawmutt Design and Construction will handle the renovation work, which includes the creation of a new canopy entrance to the Wharf Room and arched room interiors to reflect the hotel's famed waterfront design. Guest rooms will be redesigned by Jinnie Kim Design of Brookline to create "a more residential" rather than hotel room feel.

"It's very important to that our interior space reflect who we are and where we are," says the spokeswoman. "We think Boston is a city that loves things that are distinctly Boston and we want to be a distinctly Boston hotel."

The Wharf Room renovation work is expected to be completed by March but guest rooms won't be totally refurbished until May.
