Mayor Names Team for Slave Memorial Site

PHILADELPHIA-The long-sought President's House memorial at the site of Washington's house and slave quarters on Independence Mall will break ground this spring.

PHILADELPHIA-A team headed by locally based Kelly/Maiello Architects and Planners has been selected to design and build the President’s House memorial at Independence National Historical Park, which will be the first national memorial commemorating slaves. The selection follows a nationally distributed RFP that drew 21 submissions representing more than 100 firms and it is pending final approval from PennDOT, which is managing the $3.6-million federal grant for the $5.1-million project.

The memorial will be constructed on the southeast corner of Sixth and Market streets in Independence Mall next to Liberty Bell Center on land owned by the National Park Service. It is the site of the house occupied by presidents George Washington and John Adams between 1790 and 1800.

The site also includes quarters for Washington’s slaves, believed to number at least nine and include Oney Judge, Martha Washington’s maid, and Hercules, Washington’s cook, both of whom escaped. Within the next two weeks, prior to groundbreaking, an archeological dig will take place to determine whether or not there are any buried artifacts from that era.
