Both buildings would sit on a five-acre site between 11th and 13th streets, making it accessible from both eastbound and westbound connectors of Interstate 84. The facilities also would be within walking distance of the existing convention facility, Boise Centre on the Grove.
"I have identified a winning formula that consistently performs in secondary and tertiary markets," says Hammons, who expects the hotel to perform well thanks to several demand drivers including Boise State University, the State Capitol and several big companies in town including Boise Cascade LLC, Hewlett Packard, Micron Technology, and Super Value (Albertsons).
The hotel will be managed by John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts while the exhibition facility will be leased and managed by the Greater Boise Auditorium District, which also runs Boise Centre on the Grove. Auditorium District chairman Stephenson Youngerman says that the new facilities will help improve the performance of its existing convention facility.
"To maximize the potential of our group business, the area requires an expanded exhibition facility and upscale hotel," Youngerman says. "The partnership is a strategic means for strengthening the economic development of the downtown core and the overall area."
In addition to Idaho, Hammons recently announced his entry into the Utah market, where he is planning 520 hotel rooms and 100,000 sf of meeting space next to a one-million-sf lifestyle center in Pleasant Grove, about 30 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport. Plans include a 10-story, 300-suite Embassy Suites Hotel and an adjoining convention center. Next door, he also plans a 10-story, 220-room Courtyard by Marriott. All three would be owned by Hammons and by John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts.
