SEATTLE-Members of the oldest Downtown church here have approved the sale of the property to developer Nitze-Stagen & Co. The transaction preserves the 100-year-old building, opens up an adjacent parcel for a high-rise office development and provides Seattle First United Methodist Church with cash to procure a new location. The church is selling a full block bounded by Fourth and Fifth avenues and Marion and Columbia streets. Previous plans called for demolishing the domed sanctuary building on the property; instead, it will now be nominated for landmark status. The sanctuary is located at the north end of the block, closer to Marion Street. The new development would occur on the south side of the block, across Columbia Street from the 76-story Columbia Center and the 62-floor Seattle Municipal Tower (formerly Key Tower).

Nitze-Stagen’s plans call for a 40-story, 670,000-sf office tower that is tentatively slated for completion in 2010. The tower will include a small amount of street-level retail and 7,500 sf of expansion space for the adjacent, longstanding Rainier Club. No plans have been hammered out for the re-use of the sanctuary.

Seattle First United Methodist Church is reportedly in the process of acquiring a new location immediately north of the Downtown core in Belltown to continue its mission. The exact location has not been disclosed but a property on Third Avenue between Wall and Bell streets was mentioned last year. The church expects to make the move in 2008. The National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation worked with the church to preserve its existing building.
