Floorworks, a Toronto-based company specializing in engineered hardwood flooring for homes and offices, has begun buying timber from sustainable forest grower Futuro Forestal, a non-profit German-Panamanian company backed by Yale University. The company is planning to introduce floor coverings made from that wood in its FUSE collection, for commercial and residential use, this summer.

Under the "Floorprint" program, Floorworks donates part of the money from the sold products to Futuro Forestal, which then replants a percentage of the forest based on the amount of wood a developer or builder buys. The replanted forest, in Panama, will be brought back to its natural environment and remain in stewardship for the next 50 years.

Developers, builders and architects who use this wood can earn up to six LEED-certified points toward their buildings. Participating in the program also gives them the ability to go beyond the government's LEED regulation standard and receive carbon credits to offset the firm's total carbon footprint.
