The DOE-JGI is situated halfway between its two parent facilities, the Lawrence Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories. The DOE-JGI initially occupied one 30,000-sf building at 2800 Mitchell in the late 1990s and in 2000 expanded its leasehold there to include a second 30,000-sf building. Starting next year, when its previous lease is set to expire, the DOE-JGI will expand into the campus' only other structure, an 18,000-sf building at its entrance that previously was occupied by Western Careers College, previously known as Silicon Valley College.
The 18,000-sf building is currently being renovated for use by DOE-JGI. The Institute expects to occupy the building in the first quarter of 2008. This building will be used to consolidate administrative and informatics staff and will feature a new education outreach laboratory. Breck Lutz with Cornish & Carey represented DOE-JGI in its lease negotiations. The revised lease terms were not released by the parties involved and not otherwise immediately available.
The DOE-JGI, supported by the DOE Office of Science, unites the expertise of five national laboratories, Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, and Pacific Northwest, along with the Stanford Human Genome Center. Production Genomics Facility provides integrated high-throughput sequencing and computational analysis that enable systems-based scientific approaches to these challenges.
Founded as a virtual institute in 1997, DOE JGI opened the doors of the Production Genomics Facility in its present location in 1999. The first phase of the new lease will extend though 2013 with the option to run until 2018. The current DOE JGI staff of 240 University of California employees includes biologists, computer scientists, engineers and support staff.
"We have grown considerably over the last 10 years as we have transitioned from determining the DNA code for the human genome to a national user facility for the DNA sequencing of many different important organisms," says Eddy Rubin, DOE-JGI director. "Our goal is to sustain our leadership in providing the information that will advance the nation's interests in developing renewable sources of clean energy, tracking the fate of carbon in our atmosphere, and restoring our environment."
