Perspective

Recently, I read in our local paper that its highly respected publisher had left to assume a new role in a major-market publication. Unfortunately, this individual never made it to the new job; the offer was withdrawn due to a misrepresented undergraduate degree. As luck would have it, his old job was also already filled. This isn’t an isolated incident. As a matter of course, we check all degrees before a candidate moves too far along in a search process. Everyone recognizes that professionals package themselves and put their best foot forward, and we’ve come to expect to dig deep during an interview to find out what he or she has truly accomplished. However, it’s shocking how many otherwise respected professionals have not only shaded the truth, but outright lied in their resumes. It behooves all hiring managers to check carefully all the facts about degrees and other certifications, because it can be disastrous to uncover a lie after an offer is extended and the new employee is on board.
