Perspective

The web is an amazing tool for finding just about everything and anything. In the world of recruiting, it is now pro forma for recruiters and hiring managers to perform web searches to uncover a wide range of information on candidates. The problem is that Google and other general search engines are not ideally geared for searches on individuals. However, there are niche sites that are tailored to this function. Once such site is ZoomInfo.com, which produces a whole dossier for individuals on whom you perform a search. There are also new sites emerging that promise to be even more powerful. There is an article on this subject (“Searching for John Q. Public”) in the InfoTech section of the July 30 issue of Business Week . It talks about Spock, a new people-specialized search engine that promises to generate even more personal data. The reality is that, over time, the level of personal data available on the web will be extraordinary. It’s probably a good idea to run a report on yourself to be aware of what’s out there because someone’s bound to be doing a search on you.
