Local JV To Oversee Arena Development

PITTSBURGH-The Sports & Exhibition Authority selects Oxford Development and Chester Engineers to marshal construction of the Penguins' arena.

PITTSBURGH-Oxford Development Co. and Chester Engineers Inc. have been selected by the Sports & Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County to oversee design and construction of the 730,000-sf multi-use arena that will be home to the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team. The two locally based firms have formed a JV to represent SEA on the project.

The arena will be located along Centre and Fifth avenues, across from the existing Mellon Arena. As GlobeSt.com previously reported, the estimated construction cost is $290 million, and the arena is expected to be completed in time for the 2009-2010 hockey season.

SEA is the property owner, which is leasing it to the Penguins under a deal reached among team owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle, Gov. Ed Rendell, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, and Don Onorato, Allegheny County chief executive, this March. In addition to hosting Penguins games, the arena will also be used for concerts and other events.
