The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission has unveiled plans to begin the first phase of a five-MW solar array with a 700 KW solar energy grid on its own properties. The commission has also picked Epuron LLC, a German company with offices in Philadelphia, to install photovoltaic panels, and will negotiate a power purchase agreement.
"At the forefront of regional policymaking efforts to combat global climate problems is the need to locate clean, renewable energy sources," says Susan Bass Levin, NJMC chairman and commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. "We are taking the lead in demonstrating how these technologies are both environmentally responsible and economically beneficial."
As part of the plan, the new Meadowlands Center for Scientific and Environmental Observation will get much of its daytime power from rooftop solar panels. The 10,000-sf center is slated to open late this year.
The effort is part of a larger plan launched in late 2005, as reported by Real Estate New Jersey, to create a solar energy farm on the rooftops of public and commercial buildings in the Meadowlands region. Just over a year ago, the plan was expanded to focus on a goal of creating 20 MW of energy from renewable sources, including solar, by 2020. And the NJMC is currently working with Rutgers University to develop a climate action plan for the Meadowlands District, including a carbon footprint for different types of land uses.
