Balfour Beatty Wins $110M Fort Lee Design Mandate

FAIRFAX, VA-Balfour Beatty Construction has been awarded a contract by the US Army Corps of Engineers to provide design-build services for the new $110-million Combat Services Support Center, Logistics University at Fort Lee. The Balfour Beatty Construction design-build team, which includes Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum is currently working on completely the design and plans to move earth on the project this fall, Steve Smithgall, EVP and director of operations tells GlobeSt.com. Delivery will meet Defense Base Realignment and Closure Act’s deadline of 2011.

The Combat Services Support Center, Logistics University is part of BRAC’s plan to consolidate and realign military operations at Fort Lee. The Logistics University will not only be home to the Army Logistics Management College, but also logistics leadership education for non-commissioned officers, warrant officers and logistics officers.

Balfour Beatty has received BRAC-related work in a number of areas, Smithgall. “This was our first contract at Fort Lee.” The firm is poised to receive additional work as it was included in part of a small pool of pre approved general contractors to which the Army Corps of Engineers will award the rest of the $200-million-plus design work at Fort Lee.
