BURLINGAME, CA-Real estate columnist Bob Bruss, a long-time leader with the National Association of Real Estate Editors, died of cancer-related complications last week at his northern California home. He was 67.
Sometimes referred to as the “Dear Abby of Real Estate,” Bruss scribed the weekly syndicated “Real Estate Mailbag” question-and-answer real estate column for more than 20 years. He also penned the “Real Estate Notebook” feature on real estate trends, “Real Estate Law and You” about recent court decisions affecting real estate, and “Real Estate Book Review” features. Bob also wrote several books, including “The Smart Investor's Guide to Real Estate.”
Bruss, who received his law degree from the University of California's Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, joined Naree in 1978. He served as the organization's director once and as is membership secretary for many years. Bruss also taught real estate law at the College of San Mateo and in 1997 won the Norman Woest Outstanding California Real Estate Educator Award.
“I called Bob often for help on Naree business,” says former Naree president Mary Doyle-Kimball, who is now executive director of Naree. “He was always there to answer my questions and take it one step further, offering to personally help make the connections I needed.”
A memorial service for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at Crosby N. Gray & Co. in Burlingame. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bruss' memory may be sent to: Edina Educational Fund, 5701 Normandale Rd., Edina, MN 55424.
“This incredible man will be deeply missed,” says former Naree president Bradley Inman, founder of Inman News, which distributed Bruss' columns. “Bob was a believer in things like home ownership; abiding by the rule of law in real estate; ethics by Realtors and mortgage brokers; and using everything in your power as a consumer to get the service you paid for.”
