ARE YOU THINKING OF A JOB SWITCH?

The majority opinion flipped occasionally throughout the week in a neck-and-neck race between those poll respondents who are and those who are not thinking of a job switch. The final tally came down--although only slightly--on the side of those who would not. In fact, 53% of our readers are staying put while 47% have already, in their minds at least, packed their bags. To Commentator Anthony J. LoPinto, CEO of Equinox Partners in New York City (and a weekly GlobeSt.com columnist), this comes as no surprise. Here's why:

"Whenever you have an event that creates a credit-level situation, such as what we've just experienced, there's typically a very quick response on the part of employers, who will immediately start to act with caution about hiring and expansion. This was a significant enough event and highly publicized, so that reaction is understandable.

"Well, employees read the same papers; they're aware of the same issues, and for them it becomes a bit more anecdotal unless they're very senior. Their reaction to the broad publicity is to grow a bit more skittish. So I'm not surprised that your poll indicates that people are sitting still.

"If the question was to be asked in November or January, and situations stay status quo, I wouldn't expect any material difference in the responses. If there is any graver news out there, however, that will have the effect of simply expanding the survey on the side of those who are sitting still. There's a comfort zone in current employment. If they're not in particular trouble, they'll be more conservative about the inherent risk in a move."
