NEW KENSINGTON, PA-Murrysville-based Respironics Inc. has broken ground for a 165,000-sf manufacturing plant in Westmoreland Business and Research Park, which is about seven miles from its headquarters. The estimated construction cost is $32 million, and the facility is expected to be in operation within the next 12 to 14 months.
Respironics is a developer, manufacturer and distributor of medical devices, primarily for the sleep and respiratory markets worldwide. This facility will focus on products that support the obstructive sleep apnea business, which John Miclot, president and CEO, says "is a core growth driver of the company."
The building is located on 56 acres at 312 Alvin Dr. and is expandable to 225,0000 sf. It will initially employ 575 and will accommodate 860. A spokesman tells GlobeSt.com that Respironics is pursuing LEED certification for the facility. The existing Murrysville plant will become a multi-purpose facility producing ventilation and neonatal devices for the hospital and home care markets.
This plant is one of several recent expansions by Respironics, which currently employs 1,700 in Western Pennsylvania. With completion of this plant and other ongoing projects in this state the company will have invested an aggregate of $120 million over three years in land, buildings, machinery and other equipment.
It has relocated its sleep and home respiratory group to Route 286 in Monroeville, recently completed a 30,000-sf call center in Plum Borough and is developing new office space in Monroeville for its children's medical ventures business. This year, it also constructed a new manufacturing plant in the UK. Other sites are located in California, Georgia, Connecticut and Oregon. Respironics markets its products to 131 countries and has annual sales of $1.2 billion.
