WASHINGTON, DC-The District has installed green roofs on top of two government buildings here: One Judiciary Square building at 441 4th St, NW, and the Franklin D. Reeves Center at 2000 14th St, NW, have been retrofitted so that 8,000-sf and 4,000-sf of the buildings’ roofs, respectively, are now green. These are the largest municipal government buildings in the city.

Both roofs were designed to help reduce stormwater run-off into the Anacostia River. The roofs were installed by D.C. Greenworks, a local non-profit organization that offers hands-on, green-centered apprenticeships. Rooms under a green roof are at least five to seven degrees cooler than the outside, according to Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. Green roofs can also reduce total stormwater run-off by 6%, according to other statistics.
