A new prototype rollout and expansion to Canada, where the chain has opened 12 stores, boosted sales to $412.6 million, up 7% over the previous year.

"We continue to experience positive trends at a time when mall traffic has been lackluster," said Mindy C. Meads, president and chief merchandising officer.

The expansion into dresses, already tested to a small degree earlier this year, will begin next year.

"We think it's still a big opportunity, and we will see them in the spring," Meads added.

Same-store sales rose 1.9%. Net income for the quarter was $36 million, compared with net income of $32.6 million the previous year.

The company operates 801 Aeropostale stores in 47 states, 12 Aeropostale stores in Canada and 14 Jimmy'Z stores in 11 states.
