Two-Minute Warning

In the recruiting process, the first-round interview is critical. A candidate’s chance of remaining in consideration rises and falls on impressions gleaned during the first few minutes, and the most telling impression is how one communicates. All too often, otherwise-qualified candidates shoot themselves in the foot by not listening carefully to a question or blabbering on endlessly up, down and around a point, never answering the question and talking way too much. Another major faux pas is to “over share” irrelevant or personal information with the interviewer. Unfortunately, oftentimes, the same individuals who talk too much also do a poor job of reading body language. When the interviewer stops taking notes, checks his or her watch, or, worst of all, glances at his or her Blackberry, your opportunity has evaporated. The best advice in managing an interview is to make sure that you understand the question, collect your thoughts and stick to the point.
