Outlook for ’08

Best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2008. Last year certainly was interesting, to say the least, considering the sub-prime debacle, which in turn kicked-off a credit crisis from which we are still reeling. While we should not underestimate the severity and far-reaching effects of that situation, the credit markets will begin to settle down, and stronger liquid players will view 2008 as a year of opportunity. This will translate into a relatively active recruiting environment, particularly for market or sector specialists; asset and portfolio managers who have lived through a cycle or two; and, yes, developers (those with significant mixed-use or product specialties, such as medical office and assisted-living). Last year also saw fourth-quarter job freezes for the mid-levels of organizations, as managers tried to assess the market. These will be lifted in ’08, and hiring will kick back into gear (except for finance types, a segment that will continue to lag). As for compensation, base salaries will remain flat, but incentive comp will be strong for measurable performance. As it should, pay for performance will begin to dominate incentive compensation plans.

JPMORGAN ASSET MANAGEMENT Real Estate Asset Management Analyst (LOS ANGELES) Individuals in this role are involved in all aspects of the managing and reporting process including budgeting, appraisals and valuation, and project development monitoring. ING REAL ESTATE FINANCE (USA) LLC VP–Originations (LOS ANGELES) Responsibilities will be focused on originations for West Coast-based clients/prospects, the origination of loans ranging from $25 million to in excess of $200 million, in primarily lead and co-lead roles, and expand on the strength and depth of existing relationships, which will transport smoothly and translate quickly to new business.
Promotions
SYSKA HENNESSY GROUP (LOS ANGELES) As part of a senior management restructuring, Gary Brennen and Cyrus Izzo become co-CEOs and co-COOs. John Magliano remains chairman of the company, with chief engineer G. Venkata Ramu taking on the vice chairman’s duties. Brennen had been vice president and managing director of the Western region. Izzo was senior vice president and national critical facilities director, a position that he will continue to hold. NEWMARK KNIGHT FRANK (ATLANTA) The firm’s new directors are Andrew Rosenberg and Aaron Sommer.

GREATER STERLING DEVELOPMENT (STERLING, IL) Heather Sotelo is named executive director, replacing David Barajas Jr. Sotelo was executive director of the Sauk Valley Chamber of Commerce. MEREDITH & MCGREW (BOSTON) Timothy P. O’Brien starts as an associate in the suburban brokerage group. He most recently was a territory manager for Biomet 3i. GVA KIDDER MATHEWS (SEATTLE) Philip Assouad and Giovanni Napoli, multifamily investment sales specialists, join the Downtown Seattle team. Assouad and Napoli most recently were with Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services. EMORY HILL COS. (NEW CASTLE, DE) The firm’s new employees are Tara Grice, administrative assistant in property management; Maria Milyo, accountant; Kenneth M. Robertson, construction estimator; Anthony Tuskweth, construction project manager; and Nancy O’Malley, residential property manager. Grice previously was a residential property manager for DIS Management. Milyo most recently was head administrator for Zeccola Builders. Robertson had been purchasing manager for Wilkinson Builders and Tuskweth was director of construction for LCA Construction. O’Malley had been First Montgomery Group’s resident manager and leasing director. TRADE UP 1031 (WEST CHESTER, PA) Jeff Price is named COO.
