Antiques and Paper Fossils

This past weekend, I visited the Winter Antiques Show at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City. (It still strikes me as amusing to find an armory on, of all places, Park Avenue.) It was an event with an incredible array of fine, old, rather pricey, stuff. One booth had an impressive presentation of letters from some very famous people, such as Churchill and Kennedy. As I strolled through the armory, I reflected on the hand-delivery of an antique document to my office last week–a hard-copy resume. Someone dropped it off, in an effort to stand out and get my attention. When I receive a paper resume, it does stand out, but not necessarily in positive terms. The speed and efficiency of digital resumes and other career-related material has become the norm, and a hard copy, unless specifically requested, is definitely passé. So, save a tree–or simply enter the 21st Century–and send an email.
