January Thaw

The subprime debacle set in motion more than just a credit crunch; it spawned a hiring freeze across most industries, including real estate. Job postings fell sharply in the fourth quarter as companies gauged the impact of the growing crisis. Well, it looks like the tide may be turning. Hitwise, a firm that measures Internet traffic to over one million unique websites, reported last week that January visits to the major job boards (Monster, HotJobs, CareerBuilders), were running 22% ahead of last year in response to increased posting activity and greater interest in making a change (not surprising in an uncertain environment). The trend is also strong in real estate. Last month, SelectLeaders’ new job posting activity was ahead of the pace in 2007, and the early returns for February continue the positive trend. Although it’s too soon to call it a trend, it’s definitely a refreshing indicator.
