For 365 Main, the program rounds out a "greening" effort that includes participation in programs offered by PG&E, the Green Grid and the US Green Building Council. For the EPA, 365 Main will help provide benchmark data for creating a standard by which the industry can be measured. As an Energy Star partner, 365 Main has agreed to measure and track energy performance where possible by using tools such as those offered by Energy Star, to develop and implement a plan consistent with the program's guidelines, and to educate staff and the public about the resulting energy savings.

The development of a rating system for Datacenters is a separate effort. The rating system will measure the efficiency of power and cooling systems within data center facilities, but will not address the efficiency of IT equipment running within data centers. The EPA is working on a separate specification for server hardware.

Datacenters house computing, networking and data storage equipment as well as the infrastructure to power and cool the equipment. A Fall 2007 report by the EPA estimated that data centers accounted for about 1.5% of total US electricity consumption in 2006 or (61 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), which is equivalent to the electricity consumed by 5.8 million households. Federal servers and data centers alone account for approximately 6 billion kWh (10 percent) of this electricity use, for a total electricity cost of about $450 million annually. The report projected that national energy consumption by servers and data centers could double by 2011.
