Atlanta-based Carter was selected by the university as program manager to develop the projects, which are aimed at enhancing student-life-related facilities on the campus. The university is located 15 miles southeast of Atlanta and has 6,000 students.

"Our number-one purpose is to meet the higher education needs for this region," Thomas Harden, Clayton State president, said in a prepared statement. "We need to provide a residential experience for first-time, full-time freshmen. There also needs to be more opportunities on campus for activities for all students."

The housing facility will be the university's first on-campus housing, is designed around a freshmen residency program that dovetails with the first-year curriculum and is meant to bring students together to foster academic and social growth. The student activity center includes a variety of physical education and recreational spaces, as well as areas for student groups to work and play together.

This is the latest university project for Carter. The company recently completed new student housing at Georgia State University, comprising 1.2 million sf, 2,000 beds and one parking deck in Atlanta, as well as 500 beds at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, GA. Carter is also completing a 1,000-bed student housing project at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, GA.

"The expansion of universities in Georgia over the last few years has been tremendous," says Carter president Scott Taylor. "I'm glad to see Clayton State experiencing an increasing student population."
