Representatives from the hospital were not available for comment. Beaumont Hospitals is seeking Department of Community Health approval of a certificate of need for the expansion.

The expansion will be constructed to the north of the existing hospital. The expansion will include the replacement of the hospital's existing 62,875-sf emergency center with a 96,000-sf center which will have 173 private patient rooms, a 36-bed intensive care unit and four operating rooms, according to the release. The hospital's pediatric emergency center will also increase from 11 rooms to 20 rooms.

Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak is the only Level I Trauma Center in Oakland County and Macomb County. The hospital's licensed bed capacity is expected to remain at 1,061 beds, according to the released statement.

The hospital was last expanded in 2004 with the 656,000-sf south tower, a spokesman says. Site work and moving of utility lines is expected to begin in the spring with foundation work beginning in December. The expansion is expected to be completed in March 2011, according to the release.

Beaumont Services Co. will provide program management. Turner Construction Co. will provide construction management. Harley Ellis Devereaux will provide architectural design and engineering services and Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabuam Inc. will handle program and planning.
