TAMPA, FL-David E. Sobelman, a former White House staffer turned commercial real estate broker, has been promoted to executive vice president of Calkain Companies Inc. He has been with the company throughout its three-year history, previously serving as VP at its office in Tampa's Westshore office district.

"I'll have a much bigger role in planning the firm's strategy, both nationally and internationally, as it pertains to the growth of the company," Sobelman tells GlobeSt.com. He will also be instrumental in enhancing Calkain's business operations.

Sobelman joined Calkain shortly after the company was formed in January 2005 by Jonathan Hipp, a veteran commercial broker and former colleague at Grubb & Ellis Co. Hipp, now the company's president, is based in Reston, VA, while Sobelman established the Tampa office, near his hometown of Sarasota, FL.

"We planned from the outset that we wouldn't be a two-man operation forever," Sobelman says. Calkain now has 20 employees nationwide and focuses on single-tenant and multi-tenant retail, industrial and office net-leased transactions.

"David has been an integral part of Calkain's success," Hipp says. "David's intricate market knowledge and multifaceted research abilities have allowed him tremendous success within this competitive industry."

Sobelman's brokerage experience entails assisting and advising Calkain's clients with large institutional portfolio transactions as well as private investors with 1031 exchange assets. He served as a research analyst with Grubb & Ellis in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area, tracking 134 million sf of office and industrial properties.

Before launching his commercial real estate career, Sobelman worked on the presidential advance staff for the Clinton Administration. That job entailed logistics planning and Secret Service coordination for the president's visits, sometimes going to sites up to two weeks in advance, he says.

Sobelman is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers as well as the editorial advisory board of Real Estate Florida. He and his wife, Tanner, are heavily involved in philanthropic endeavors and co-founded the Wellspring Foundation, which provides an outlet for children to experience new cultures, religions, races and nationalities.
