Carranza earned a first-place honor in the category of "Best Trade Magazine Report—for the Commercial Real Estate Industry." The award-winning article, "Consolidation Frenzy: The Shrinking Universe of Property Firms," appeared in the January 2007 issue of Real Estate Forum.

"This detailed examination of increased M&A activity among property firms provided a comprehensive look at the recent flurry of activities. The in-depth report covered private buyers, frequent rent growth, and the risk of integration going far beyond the normal stories about the activities themselves," the judges wrote.

Carranza's article also took second place for the James D. Carper Award for "Best Entry by a Young Journalist." She joined Real Estate Media in 2001, becoming managing editor in 2005.

"This writer has a solid knowledge of business principles, which enables her to look beyond the breaking news and provide context for readers. Her extensive reporting provided a well-rounded analysis of the issues," the judges concluded with regard to the James D. Carper competition. The first-place winner was Jamie Smith Hopkins of the Baltimore Sun.

Jeanne Jones of the Puget Sound Business Journal copped this year's Robert F. Brennan award, earning a $2,000 prize for an article about trading foreign investment dollars for green cards. Allen Norwood and his team at the Charlotte Observer won a special judges citation for excellence in journalism for coverage of the mortgage crisis impact in Charlotte, NC.

The award winners were selected by a panel from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. Professor Patrick S. Washburn, a former news reporter and editor, chaired the panel. A record number of entries from professional journalists across the US were received this year, with $10,000 in prizes being awarded in 32 categories.

Real Estate Media publishes GlobeSt.com and Real Estate Forum and other regional print publications. It is also the producer of the RealShare Conference Series.
