Belk Returns to Roots with NC Expansion

MONROE, NC-The department store chain will add 30,000 sf to its 120-year-old flagship location.

MONROE, NC-Belk Inc., the nation’s largest privately owned department store chain, has launched a $6-million expansion at its flagship location, which dates back to the first store opened by William Henry Belk in 1888. The 65,000-sf anchor store at Monroe Mall, soon to become Monroe Crossing, will add 30,000 sf starting early next year, with completion set for October 2009.

“These improvements to our store are a sign of Belk’s ongoing commitment to be the department store of choice in Monroe,” says Don Robinson, store manager. He adds that the expansion will allow Belk to offer a greater variety of brands and products demanded by customers.

Belk’s original store relocated to Monroe Mall in 1979. The current store offers top designer and national brand apparel, cosmetics, accessories, shoes and home furnishings, as well as its own private-brand merchandise and a new Belk and Co. fine jewelry department.
