TAMPA, FL-Ryan Companies US Inc. has established a company-wide sustainability policy aimed at promoting an integrated design standard to meet customer needs, create value in projects and minimizing their impact on the environment. The Minneapolis-based developer has 13 buildings that have either achieved or are up for LEED certification, including its local Telecom Park project.

Ryan says it will evaluate all future projects against the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards to help building owners maximize energy efficiency, obtain their own LEED certification or pursue other third-party benchmarking systems such as EnergyStar.

"This policy sets the minimum standards that we strive to exceed for every customer," CEO Jim Ryan stated in a release. He says the company's policy is intended to acknowledge the commercial real estate industry's role in a broader community and understanding its impact on the environment.

Many of Ryan's office buildings have also received EnergyStar ratings. The developer applies its own sustainability best practices addressing site work, energy and water efficiency, construction waste and indoor air quality, regardless of whether its clients are interested in LEED status for their buildings.

"While we strive to serve our customers like no one else can, we know this means more than just responding to their business needs today," says Doug Dieck, Ryan's Southeast Division president in Tampa. "It means anticipating what those needs will be moving forward."

Ryan's sustainability policy also addresses internal practices and operations, setting goals that increase its percentage of LEED-certified projects to 15% percent this year. The company also seeks to retain more than 100 LEED-accredited employees, as well as encourage pursuit of LEED Existing Building certification for existing Ryan managed properties.
