Dan Granot & Co., an Atlanta tenant representation firm that co-brokered the seven-year lease with SDG Investments, deferred an inquiry about the lease to Mike Kunce, president and CEO of Armstrong Garden. Kunce could not be reached for comment this week.
Armstrong Garden, which owns nurseries and shops throughout Southern California plus a few more near San Francisco, made a cross-country leap in March when it bought Atlanta-based Pike Family Nurseries for a reported $5.2 million, plus outstanding lease payments. The bankruptcy purchase included 14 locations in the Atlanta metropolitan area and one in Charlotte, NC.
The regional office is expected to be established by early next fall. Pike Family Nurseries, an Atlanta market mainstay that fell victim to drought and freezes in more recent years, is retaining its brand in the meantime.
Armstrong Garden, whose history dates back nearly 120 years, is considered an innovator in the nursery business and is credited with developing the boysenberry as well as patented plants including the Hotbiscus Hibiscus and Wadda Tomato. The employee-owned company carries a variety of shrubs, flowers, fruit trees and vegetables, with some of its growing grounds and greenhouses covering up to 100 acres each.
