A DEMOCRAT IN THE WHITE HOUSE

More than half the respondents to last week's Quick Poll express that electing a Democratic president this November will "further destroy the economy," while 28% believe a Democrat will "turn things around" and 18% believe it will have no impact. Craig Sher, executive chairman of the Sembler Co., a St. Petersburg-based developer, is a strong supporter of Barack Obama and other Democratic candidates. He shares his thoughts on what a Democrat in the White House would do:

"From a positive side, I think it will help restore consumer confidence a little bit. Right now, as a society, we're reeling from bad economic news on all fronts. I'm not necessarily laying this on the current administration, but clearly we need a change in attitude.

"Consumer confidence is at a two-decade low, oil prices are rising and the cost of everything else is increasing, along with unemployment. My hope is that a Democratic president, working with a Democratic Congress, will make some positive changes that will restore consumer confidence.

"Specifically, I think there will be some tax relief for those who truly need it, in the lower and middle classes. There will be some tax increases for the wealthy, but as long as they are modest I see that as having no negative effect on the economy."
