New York-based Monster Worldwide Inc., the parent company of the online careers and recruitment resource, did not disclose many other details about its Florence center during a news conference with state and local officials. A developer and site for the new center were not disclosed, and the temporary offices will involve a 35,000-sf space in Downtown Florence.

Nevertheless, the announcement is cause for celebration in Florence, which has attracted a number of Fortune 500 and international firms in recent years, according to Kyle Edney, assistant director of the Florence County Economic Development Partnership. Earlier this month, H.J. Heinz Co. announced plans to build a $150-million frozen foods plant in Florence that will also employ 350 local residents.

"It really is a testament to the versatility of the people who live and work here in Florence," Edney tells GlobeSt.com. He says local leaders are committed to growing and diversifying the local economy with a balance of both blue and white collars.

"Florence is an ideal choice for us because it's a rapidly developing labor market with the talent we'll need to bring best-in-class service to our customers," Art O'Donnell, Monster executive vice president, said during Thursday's announcement. He added that the company will deploy new training and quality tools at its call center, offering learning opportunities for local job-seekers as well as North American customers.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said the state is committed to improving its business climate through reforms encouraging growth. "Monster's decision to locate here is another positive sign that our efforts to enhance the state's economic soil conditions are paying real dividends when it comes to attracting world-class companies and new job opportunities," Sanford said.
