The company has not yet confirmed the location of the proposed store but city documents suggest the development site is an approximately 13.5-acre parcel abutting the north end of Centennial Promenade, a power center at the intersection of Interstate 25 and County Line Road. The property owners recently were granted a rezone that city officials said was meant to attract a destination retailer with a 225,000-sf footprint, which is Ikea's preferred size.
If approved, Ikea Centennial would feature a supervised children's play area and a 350-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties as well as American dishes. The building also would have a 'Children's IKEA' area in the showroom, as well as baby-care rooms, preferred parking for people with small children and play areas throughout the store, according to Ikea.
The store's development would add 500 construction jobs to the region and, upon completion, 400 store employees. Of course, it also would provide significant annual sales and property tax revenue for local governments and schools.
There are currently 35 Ikea stores in the US and 280 worldwide. Looking ahead, Ikea says it is working on plans for new US stores in Charlotte, NC; Somerville, MA; and Tampa, FL.
