First Ikea in Colorado to be 400,000 SF

CENTENNIAL, CO-The home furnishings retailer submits plans for a two-level, 400,000-sf store immediately north of the Centennial Promenade power center at I-25 and East County Line Road.

CENTENNIAL, CO-Ikea detailed plans this morning for its first store in Colorado. The mega-box home furnishings retailer from Sweden says it has submitted plans to the City of Centennial, a southeast suburb of Denver, for a two-level, 400,000-sf store. An opening date has not yet been set. The closest Ikeas to Denver now are in Draper, UT and Tempe, AZ.

The company has not yet confirmed the location of the proposed store but city documents suggest the development site is an approximately 13.5-acre parcel abutting the north end of Centennial Promenade, a power center at the intersection of Interstate 25 and County Line Road. The property owners recently were granted a rezone that city officials said was meant to attract a destination retailer with a 225,000-sf footprint, which is Ikea’s preferred size.

If approved, Ikea Centennial would feature a supervised children’s play area and a 350-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties as well as American dishes. The building also would have a ‘Children’s IKEA’ area in the showroom, as well as baby-care rooms, preferred parking for people with small children and play areas throughout the store, according to Ikea.
