One Degree of Separation

The recruiting process for executives is an intense affair involving a significant investment in time–and, hopefully, an executive search consultant to manage the process. When a search is in full gear, numerous candidates are evaluated, multiple interviews are scheduled–and increasingly–testing is arranged with consultants who evaluate the personality and other characteristics of shortlist candidates. But it is back in the beginning of the search that the process starts with the first filter, a careful review of an individual’s resume. Everyone knows that the smart professional puts his or her best foot forward in this crucial document, and often, they take a “bit of license” in highlighting more credit for something, such as expanding their role in an acquisition or financing. This is sort of expected, and is ferreted out during interviews. However, surprisingly, more often than you think, individuals create a fictitious degree for their resume. They may have attended the college or university, but did not actually receive a degree. More shocking is that hiring managers do not attempt to verify degrees, and, as a result, some of these professionals have long careers with this important fact going undetected. When the lack of a degree is finally found, it seriously and deservedly, damages their career.
