Portable Executives

The current state of affairs is producing a significant talent pool that is on the street. Cutbacks have occurred across the board, and I expect that more will come during the fourth quarter and into early next year. However, while tough times slow down acquisitions, development and growth initiatives, companies face mounting workloads in operations and asset management. They are trying to work the portfolio more aggressively, up sales and marketing to insure they take a larger share of what transactions are out there and concentrate more on analysis and reporting (since the C-Suite wants more information in bad times). To fill organizational needs, companies turn to interim employees, temporary help to take on special projects and cover larger-than-expected organizational gaps. In response to this need, I’ve noticed a significant increase in displaced executives creating platforms from which they can market consulting services (which also produces better “optics” on their resume). This could be a long pull, so my advice is to do it right and put together a professional, well-developed presentation and quality package to go along with it – a basic website, quality business cards, a professional email address (forget AOL!). I expect that there will be plenty of opportunities for these new portable executives.
