FORT MYERS, FL-Hotel Indigo, a boutique brand of British-based InterContinental Hotels Group, has tripled its presence in Florida by opening four locations over the past three months. The newest opens March 23 in the local Historic River District, with 67 rooms in seven stories, marking the city's first newly built hotel in 20 years.

Other recent openings in the Sunshine State include a 96-room Hotel Indigo at Jacksonville's Deerwood Park and the renovated and rebranded 76-room Heritage Hotel in St. Petersburg, both which opened in late January. The 86-room Hotel Indigo Miami Lakes, formerly known as Don Shula's Golf Club, opened in December.

The four new Indigos join two others that opened in Sarasota in November 2006 and Miami's Dadeland district in August 2008. A seventh state location, a 135-room conversion called Hotel Indigo Miami Beach, is scheduled to open late this summer, according to IHG.

"Given the current state of the economy, Hotel Indigo has great potential for continued growth as it is positioned as a sensible boutique option," Janis Cannon, the chain's vice president of global brand management, tells GlobeSt.com. "We deliver an upscale hotel experience for business and leisure travelers that demand value without sacrificing service or style."

Cannon adds that Florida will remain a strategic area to grow the Hotel Indigo brand as an international travel market. "With the emergence of Latin America as a development hot spot, a strong brand presence in Florida becomes even more important," she says.

Additional deals are in the works to open Hotel Indigo in Tampa, Naples and Pensacola, Cannon says. Others are set to open around the US this year in New York City, San Diego, St. Louis and Nashville, along with several overseas, she says.
