MIAMI-Macy’s Inc. wants assurances from the city that it can generate nearly $20 million in added sales from its urban Flagler Street location. The additional sales are necessary for the Cincinnati-based department store chain to justify investing in a major store renovation, which could cost at least $20 million and involve consolidating in one building.

“The only way we would do it is if we see the ability to pick up at least $15 million in sales,” David Scheiner, president of Macy’s Florida, said during a Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce committee meeting Wednesday. “That isn’t going to be done by people coming nine to five. It isn’t going to be done without a whole downtown revitalization.”
