To meet that goal, property developers and local governments will agree to work in partnership on specific areas of activity. This includes implementing economically viable innovations in buildings, the generation of clean energy, waste management, water management, and transportation and outdoor lighting systems.
Land Co. of Osceola County LLC is building Destiny, a 64-square-mile city along Florida's Turnpike approximately one hour south of Orlando. The first phase of development will involve the 500-acre Alternative Energy Industrial Park that aims to create thousands of "green collar" jobs.
"We are proud of the recognition Destiny has received from the Clinton Climate Initiative as an urban development that can help reduce the world's carbon footprint," says Anthony Pugliese, Destiny's managing partner and CEO. "Destiny will be a global model city for sustainable living, and a hub where the latest clean technology innovations will emerge."
Destiny will be developed over 41,300 acres in Osceola County. The city's goal is to achieve at least a 50% reduction in sitewide energy demand by integrating both passive and active energy design strategies, while on-site clean renewable energy sources will produce at least 50% of remaining energy demands.
Destiny and San Francisco are the only two US cities named in the first round of Climate Positive communities. Others around the world include Melbourne, Australia; Palhoca, Brazil; Toronto and Victoria, Canada; Ahmedabad and Jaipur, India; Panama City, Panama; Pretoria and Johannesburg, South Africa; Seoul, South Korea; Stockholm, Sweden; and London, UK.
