Selected by an independent jury, which includes representatives of New Jersey Future's board of trustees as well as other professionals in development and planning, the 2009 Smart Growth Awards recognize those projects, groups and institutions that produce economically prosperous, environmentally sustainable and socially equitable places. This year's award recipients will be honored during a ceremony scheduled for Wednesday at the Newark Club in Newark.
In addition to the Avenue, South Orange's New Market project also includes the new 13,500-square-foot Eden Gourmet Market on South Orange Avenue and a parking deck that will be used to accommodate residents and shoppers, as well as streetscape improvements and more efficient land use for retail and residential amenities.
"We are proud to take part in the revitalization of South Orange, which was one of the first municipalities in New Jersey to be designated a transit village as part of the statewide promotion of smart growth development targeted at fighting sprawl and curbing dependence on vehicular traffic," says Rosanne Brooks, Sterling's director of sales and marketing, in a statement. "Residents of the Avenue will benefit from this community's close proximity to the train station, SOPAC, as well as the many restaurants, boutique shops and businesses located in South Orange's Central Business District."
Once completed, the Avenue will comprise 79 condominium residences, featuring one to three bedrooms and ranging from approximately 700 to 2,500 square feet. Some homes will also feature private outdoor terraces.
The first floor of the three-story building will house a state-of-the-art fitness studio, exclusive to residents of the Avenue. Additionally, the building's ground floor will feature convenience retail outlets.
